ASTM D8485 Apparatus
SKU
00T2040-D8485

The ASTM D8485 is a laboratory glassware corrosion test used to evaluate how engine coolants affect common cooling system metals. This test is used to measure the effect of coolants on metal test specimens that are similar to the metals present in electrical vehicle (EV) engines. The ASTM D8485 is very similar to ASTM D1384, but uses a different number of specimens and a different assembly of the specimens.

ASTM D8485 test specimens are 1 x 2 x 1/16 inches and have a 17/64-inch center hole.  These specimens are prepared in the same way as ASTM D1384 test specimens.

The apparatus is available in the following voltages/frequencies:

  • Tamson ASTM D8040 230V/50-60Hz (P/N: 00T2040)
  • Tamson ASTM D8040 115V/60Hz (P/N: 00T2041)

The standard ASTM D8485 test specimen set includes:

  1. Copper (UNS C110000, C110) specimen
  2. Stainless steel (UNS 30400, Grade 304) specimen
  3. Aluminum (UNS A93003, 3003)  specimen

The ASTM D8485 is also known as the “Glassware Test” involves:

  1. A controlled lab setup
  2. Metal coupons immersed in coolant
  3. Air which is bubbled through the solution
  4. A test duration: 336 hours (14 days)

Metals to be tested

  •             Copper
  •             Brass
  •             Solder
  •             Steel
  •             Cast iron
  •             Aluminum

The purpose is

  1.             To screens coolant formulations
  2.             Measures corrosion by weight loss of metal coupons

The ASTM D8485 is used for passenger car and light-duty coolant validation. It's a pre-qualification of coolant chemistry and to check many OEM and coolant specification requirements
