ASTM D4807

This test method covers the determination of sediment in crude oils by membrane filtration. This test method has been validated for crude oils with sediments up to approximately 0.15 mass %. The accepted unit of measure for this test method is mass %, but an equation to convert to volume % is provided.

General:

ASTM D4807 is a standard test method for determining the sediment content of crude oil by membrane filtration. The method measures insoluble particulate matter that may cause operational problems during storage, transportation, and refining. It is widely used to assess crude oil cleanliness and product quality.

Precision:

The method includes established repeatability and reproducibility values determined through interlaboratory testing. Precision depends on the sediment concentration and careful adherence to the specified filtration, washing, and drying procedures.

Test:

A measured quantity of crude oil is diluted with a suitable solvent and filtered through a pre-weighed membrane filter. The filter is then washed, dried under controlled conditions, and reweighed. The increase in filter mass is used to calculate the sediment content, which is reported as mass percent of the crude oil sample.
