ASTM D3142

This test method covers the determination of the density of cutback asphalts using a glass hydrometer. It is applicable to cutback asphalts which are liquid at room temperature. It provides more explicit testing procedures than those in method ASTM - D1298.

The determination is performed using a hydrometer.

The hydrometer floats in the sample.

The depth of immersion depends on the liquid density.

The scale provides a direct reading of density, relative density, or API gravity.

The measurement is carried out at a controlled temperature (typically 15°C or 60°F).

Applications for this method are i.e. quality control of cutback asphalt for road construction, product specification verification, custody transfer and trade control or process monitoring in asphalt production.

The method offers a simple method and is relatively inexpensive. It is suitable for quality control and direct reading is possible.
