ASTM D849

ASTM D849 is a qualitative test method used to determine the corrosiveness of industrial aromatic hydrocarbons toward copper. The test provides an indication of the presence of corrosive contaminants, such as sulfur-containing or acidic compounds, that may attack copper and copper-containing equipment during processing, storage, or transport.

A polished copper strip is immersed in 200 mL of the test sample in a flask fitted with a condenser and heated in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes. After exposure, the copper strip is removed, cleaned, and visually compared with the ASTM Copper Strip Corrosion Standards to assign a corrosion classification.
