ASTM D130 & D4048 & D7095

These test methods (ASTM D130 - EN/ISO 2160 - IP 154 - DIN 51811 - ASTM D4048 - IP 112 - ASTM D7095) cover the determination of the corrosiveness to copper (copper corrosion) of aviation gasoline, aviation turbine fuel, automotive gasoline, cleaners (Stoddard) solvent, kerosene, diesel fuel, distillate fuel oil, lubricating oil, lubricating greases, and natural gasoline or other hydrocarbons having a vapour pressure no greater than 124 kPa (18 psi) at 37.8°C.

Why is a Corrosiveness to Copper (copper corrosion, ASTM D130, D4048, D7095) from Petroleum Products by Copper Strip Test important?

Crude petroleum contains sulphur compounds, most of which are removed during refining. However, of the sulphur compounds remaining in the petroleum product, some can have a corroding action on various metals and this corrosivity is not necessarily related directly to the total sulphur content. The effect can vary according to the chemical types of sulphur compounds present. The copper corrosion strip test is designed to assess the relative degree of corrosivity of a petroleum product.

Summary of the test method

A polished copper strip is immersed in a specific volume of the sample being tested and heated under conditions of temperature and time that are specific to the class of material being tested. At the end of the heating period, the copper strip is removed, washed and the colour and tarnish level assessed against the ASTM copper strip corrosion standard.

Why should you use a Tamson copper corrosion bath to determine corrosiveness to copper from petroleum products by copper strip test?

Our copper corrosion baths are the most robust in the market with the widest temperature range from ambient +5°C to 250°C. The cover of the bath has six openings, each with a lid and hook for suspending a copper corrosion test vessel (P/N 14T0100). Or the openings can accommodate test tubes in test tube holders (P/N 14T0102). All essential parts of the copper corrosion bath are made from stainless steel. The copper corrosion bath has a standard drain to empty the bath content. All the required accessories and consumables for ASTM D130 - EN/ISO 2160 - IP 154 - DIN 51811 - ASTM D4048 - IP 112 - ASTM D7095 tests are supplied by Tamson. Examples of consumables and accessories for copper corrosion tests are: pressure vessels (test cylinders), ASTM copper strip corrosion test standard, copper strips (99.9% purity), P220 sanding paper, P240 sanding paper, 25 x 150 mm test tubes, multistrip vise, silicon carbide powder (1 kg), flat viewing test tube, and test tube holders.
