ASTM D7501

The ASTM D7501 and IP PM EA test methods cover the determination by filtration time after cold soak of the suitability for a biodiesel (B100) blend stock that meets all other requirements of specification ASTM D6751 and has a cloud point below 20°C to provide adequate low temperature operability performance to at least the cloud point of the finished blend.

Why is the determination of fuel filter blocking potential of biodiesel (B100) blend stock by cold soak filtration test important?

Some substances that are soluble or appear to be soluble in biodiesel (B100) at room temperature will, upon cooling to temperatures above the cloud point or standing at room temperature for extended periods, come out of solution. This phenomenon has been observed in both B100 and BXX blends. These substances can cause filter plugging. This method provides an accelerated means of assessing the presence of these substances in B100 and their propensity to plug filters. B100 biodiesel fuels that give short filtration times are expected to give satisfactory operation of BXX blends at least down to the cloud point of the biodiesel blends. The test method can be used in specifications as a means of controlling levels of minor filter plugging components in biodiesel and biodiesel blends.

Summary of the test method

In this test method, 300 mL of biodiesel (B100) is stored at 4.5 ± 0.5°C for 16 hours, allowed to warm to 25 ±1°C , and vacuum filtered through a single 0.7 μm glass fiber filter at controlled vacuum levels of ~70–85 kPa (21–25 in. of Hg). The filtration time is reported in seconds.

Why should you use a Tamson cold soak bath?

The Tamson TLB50 cold soak bath is a specially designed bench top unit with programmable digital temperature control suitable for cooling and heating samples in accordance with ASTM D7501 and IP PM EA. It can condition up to 12 biodiesel samples in 500 mL jars at 4.5°C for sixteen hours. The TLB50 cold soak bath can be used to maintain the samples at +25°C after this cold soak test. The Tamson TLB50 cold soak bath is the most robust in the market with a temperature range from -5°C to 80°C.  All the required accessories and consumables for ASTM D7501 and  IP PM EA tests are supplied by Tamson. TLB50 has standardly a drain and overflow outlet. All parts which will be in contact with the bath fluid are made from stainless steel and can be easily cleaned.
