ASTM D7667 & D7671 & IP227 & D4814 & IP611

These test methods ASTM D7667, ASTM D7671, IP 227, ASTM D4814, and IP 611 cover the determination of the corrosive tendencies towards silver of aviation turbine fuel, automotive spark-ignition engine oils or automotive gasoline having a vapour pressure no greater than 124 kPa (18 psi) at 37.8°C.

Why is a corrosiveness to silver (silver corrosion) from aviation turbine fuel, automotive spark-ignition engine oils or automotive gasoline by silver strip test important?

Crude petroleum contains sulphur compounds, most of which are removed during refining. However, of the sulphur compounds remaining in the petroleum product or introduced into the fuel during storage and distribution, some can have a corroding action on various metals and this corrosivity is not necessarily related directly to the total sulphur content. The effect can vary according to the chemical types of sulphur compounds present. The silver strip corrosion test is designed to assess the relative degree of corrosivity of a petroleum product towards silver and silver alloys.

Summary of the test method

A polished silver strip is immersed in a specific volume of the sample being tested and heated under conditions of temperature inside and time a silver corrosion bath that are specific to the class of material being tested. At the end of the heating period, the silver strip is removed, washed and the colour and tarnish level assessed against the ASTM silver strip corrosion standard.

Why should you use a  Tamson silver corrosion bath to determine corrosiveness to silver from petroleum products by silver strip test?

Our silver corrosion baths are the most robust in the market with the widest temperature range from ambient +5°C to 250°C. The cover of the bath has six openings, each with a lid and hook for suspending a silver corrosion test vessel (P/N 14T0100). Or the openings can accommodate (amber) test tubes in test tube holders (P/N 14T0102). All essential parts of the silver corrosion bath are made from stainless steel. The silver corrosion bath has a standard drain to empty the bath content. All the required accessories and consumables for ASTM D7667, ASTM D7671, IP 227, ASTM D4814 and IP 611 tests are supplied by Tamson. Examples of consumables and accessories for silver corrosion tests are pressure vessels (test cylinders), the ASTM silver strip corrosion test standard,  (thin) silver strips (99.9% purity), P240 sanding paper, 25 x 150 mm test tubes, glass cradles, amber test tubes with cold-finger condensers, silver strip centring devices (SSCD), PTFE cradle holders, a multistrip vise, silicon carbide powder (1 kg), flat viewing test tubes, and test tube holders.
