ASTM D97

ASTM D97 is a standard test method for determining the pour point of petroleum products. If the sample no longer moves when the container is tilted, the pour point has been reached.

The test is it is commonly used for fuels (diesel, fuel oils), lubricating oils, hydraulic oils and other petroleum-based products.

This pour point is critical for low-temperature operation, such as outdoor equipment, vehicles and industrial systems in cold climates.

General

Pour point of a petroleum oil is an index of the lowest teniperature of its utility for certain applications. The cloud point (Test Method D 2500) is usually higher than the pour point.

Precision

  • Repeatability: 3°C
  • Reproducibility: 6°C

Test

After preliminary heating, the sample is cooled at a specified rate and examined at intervals of 3 ° C for flow characteristics. The lowest temperature at which the movement of the oil is observed is recorded as the pour point,
