Standard Test Method for Corrosion Test for Heat Transfer Fluids in Glassware
It evaluates the corrosivity of heat transfer fluids (HTFs) toward common system metals under controlled laboratory conditions.
It is essentially the heat transfer fluid equivalent of ASTM D1384 (which applies to engine coolants).
This test method covers a simple beaker-type procedure for evaluating the effects of heat transfer fluids (HTF) on metal specimens under controlled laboratory conditions. Fluids tested under this method are specifically designed for heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
The Tamson ASTM D8040 apparatus is available in the following voltages/frequencies:
- Tamson ASTM D8040 230V/50-60Hz (P/N: 00T2040)
- Tamson ASTM D8040 115V/60Hz (P/N: 00T2041)

This test method covers a simple beaker-type procedure for evaluating the effects of heat transfer fluids (HTF) on metal specimens under controlled laboratory conditions. Fluids tested under this method are specifically designed for heating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
The test test determines how well a heat transfer fluid protects metals used in thermal fluid systems, such as:
- Carbon steel
- Copper
- Brass
- Stainless steel
- Aluminum (if applicable to the system)
It is used for:
- Qualification of new heat transfer fluids
- Monitoring in-service fluids
- Comparing corrosion inhibitor performance
- Supporting OEM and industrial specifications
Main Features:
- Complete apparatus for ASTM D8040
- All accessories can be supplied by Tamson
- Robust bath
- All wetted parts are made from stainless steel
- Bath drain
- Bath is equipped with cooling coil for counter-cooling
- Six positions
- Six flowmeters included
- Very robust glassware with clamp to ensure proper sealing
- Level protection device
- No rubber stopper is needed, as rubber stoppers can crack over time
The apparatus is available in the following voltages/frequencies:
- Tamson ASTM D1384 230V/50-60Hz (P/N: 00T2040)
- Tamson ASTM D1384 115V/60Hz (P/N: 00T2041)
