This method evaluates the cleanliness and quality of LPG by measuring substances that do not readily vaporize. A LPG sample is condensated by refrigeration and evaporated under controlled conditions. The sample is refrigerated by means of a cooling coil to collect 100 mL of liquid in a weathering tube. The sample is than allowed to evaporate ( “weather") at ambient pressure under specified conditions. The remaining residu is observed.

A TCC-B D1837 is used to cool down the sample and to hold the weathering tube in a vertical position. The TCC-B D1837 is a single and adjustable circulator bath with position for one cooling coil. The accessories for tests in accordance with ASTM D2158 can also be supplied by Tamson.

The TCC-B is available in the following voltages/frequencies:

  • TCC-B D1837 230V/50Hz (P/N: 00T0315)
  • TCC-B D1837 230V/60Hz (P/N: 00T0316)

General

This method evaluates the cleanliness and quality of LPG by measuring substances that do not readily vaporize or nonvolatile residue:

  • Oils
  • Polymers
  • Contaminants or degradation products

These residues can cause operational issues in equipment like burners, regulators, and fuel systems.

Test:

LPG is evaporated under controlled conditions and the remaining residue is observed.

The sample is refrigerated by means of a cooling coil and collect 100 mL of liquid in a weathering tube, The sample allowed to evaporate ( “weather") at ambient pressure under specified conditions. Remaining residuw is observed.

The residue may be:

  • Weighed quantitatively, or
  • Visually assessed for appearance (e.g., oily film, particles)

Precision has not been determined on this method in terms of residue and oil stain results.

Description

Cooling coil—Approximately 6 m of 6 mm is wound in an outside diameter of 63,5 ±1,5mm.  The top of the coil is  at least 25 mm below the top of the cooling vessel . The coils’ dimensions are as described per ASTM D2158. The downstream end of the coil is connected to a 3.2 mm needle valve having an outlet connection not more than 76 mm long.

Applications

ASTM D2158 is commonly used by:

  • LPG producers and distributors
  • Quality control laboratories
  • Regulatory and inspection bodies

It helps ensure LPG meets specifications for:

  • Domestic and industrial fuel use
  • Engine fuel systems (e.g., autogas)

The TCC-B is a single adjustable circulator bath with position for one cooling coil to test the volatility or residue of liquefied petroleum gases according to ASTM D1837 and ASTM D2158. The TCC-B is a low temperature circulator that can reach temperatures down to -85°C. At this low temperature the heat removal capacity is around 250 Watt. The bath can also be used to circulate to an external application. The drain located at the back provides easy removal of the bath fluid. The bath has a float to detect a low fluid level. The used cooling system is ozone friendly, so it doesn't contain any CFK/HCFK gas. The bath conforms to CE regulation. The TCC-B has a very precise temperature control. The set point can be set in steps of 0.1°C. A pressure pump provides circulation in the bath or via an external circuit. The pressure of the pump is 1000 mBar at 16 litres per minute.

Main Features:
  • Holder to hold weathering tube in vertical position
  • Wheels for easy transport
  • Temperature range down to -85°C
  • Level detection
  • Stainless steel, robust bath
  • Low energy consumption
  • Easy to read display
  • Very quiet
  • High heat removal capacity

The TCC-B is available in the following voltages/frequencies:

  • TCC-B D1837 230V/50Hz (P/N: 00T0315)
  • TCC-B D1837 230V/60Hz (P/N: 00T0316)
