ASTM D3231 test method

The ASTM D3231 test method covers the determination of phosphorus in gasoline. Organic matter in the sample is decomposed by ignition in the presence of zinc oxide. The residue is dissolved in sulfuric acid and reacted with ammonium molybdate and hydrazine sulfate. The absorbance of the Molybdenum Blue complex is proportional to the phosphorus concentration in the sample and is read at approximately 820 nm in a 5 cm cell.

Phosphorus in gasoline will damage catalytic convertors used in automotive emission control systems, and its level therefore is kept low.

Tamson ASTM D3231 constant temperature bath

For this test method, Tamson supplies a constant temperature bath as described in section 5.2. The prepared samples are transferred to 100 mL volumetric flasks. These flasks are placed in a constant temperature bath for 25 minutes between 82.2 °C and 87.8 °C (180 °F to 190 °F). The Tamson D3231 apparatus comes standard equipped with a levelling platform with a rack to hold up to eight 100 mL volumetric flasks submerged exactly to the mark during the entire period of sample heating. The cover of the bath has eight openings, each with a lid to hold the volumetric flask in the same position. The temperature range of the apparatus is from ambient +5°C to 200°C. The bath is completely made of stainless steel and standard equipped with a cooling coil and pump.

Primary benefits of utilizing the Tamson ASTM D3231 apparatus:

  • Equipped to hold up to eight 100 mL volumetric flasks
  • Levelling platform can be adjusted to line up the height of the bath fluid level with the mark on the 100 mL volumetric flask
  • Large enough reservoir to keep the bath temperature stable during the entire period of sample heating
  • Very precise temperature control (better than ±0.02°C)
  • Metal parts made from stainless steel
  • Bath is equipped with a pump to circulate the bath medium to an external application
  • Bath can be safely emptied using the bath drain
